Joining the Volleyball Team
Demonstration
Today, 12 of September of 2017, I was told that I was chosen to represent the school on the SAAC tournament. In a nutshell, this championship consists of a group of international schools coming together from around the South American continent to participate in a volleyball competition. When I joined volleyball, I never imagined that I'd actually be able to qualify for this prestigious competition, this is due to the fact that my goals were primarily to improve while also forming a sense of companionship with the rest of the team. I believe that being called to participate in this tournament, works as a way to recognise my efforts for the past 5-6 months of hard work. Although I'm proud of this accomplishment, this doesn't mean that my goal has been accomplished, it only means that I'm on the right track to becoming a better volleyball player. Of course, this doesn't mean that there haven't been any problems along the way, for example, motivation or planning issues, yet through perseverance and team motivation, I have been able to handle this process.
Planning
After the investigation stage, it is imperative to create a plan of action which allows me to take on this project. In order to do so, I marked my calendar as this will help me organize my weeks and get the most out of them in terms of practice times. This will be especially helpful in July as it will allow me to keep up with the skills that I will have learned for the past months. The calendar showed encompasses that which was done during school months and vacations. In the places in which it states "Volleyball practice", it means that there was a training session at that specific time. Where it says "Volleyball Investigation" this means the home practices I go through in which I watch tutorial videos and constantly repeat. Finally, during July I was only able to do this at home as it was summer vacations, although I do have planned to practice during some of the weekdays.
Investigation
Once 11th grade started, I realized that I wanted to take part of a sports team in FDR school. I decided to look at my passions, analyzing whether I should choose a sport based on my expertise or what's more fun. I decided to take up volleyball, as it conjoined both of these strands on a perfect balance. Moreover, as I started going to the first couple of practices, I noticed that my abilities were not up to par with the rest of the team. Thus, I decided that my goal for the next two years in high school would be to improve my volleyball skills while also become part of the elite high school team. Contrary to popular I believe, volleyball is not simple, in order to play, one must be focused at all times, not only in making the right positions but also when moving around the court. As to improve, I talked with my coach, who gave me a couple of pointers on which skills I needed to improve.
1. Exclaim loudly if you are going to hit the ball as to avoid confusion with other players
2. Stay still with arms extended when doing the bump
3. Learn positions within the courts when spikes come from different angles
In order to get better, I've decided to take a couple of measures that will ensure my success. First of all, I'm investigating through the internet as to find famous teams as these will provide first-hand research on my position within the court. Second, I've found specific training tutorials which help one improve techniques such as bumping through constant repetition. Finally, in order to be able to complete these tasks, I was able to buy training equipment to be able to have some extra practice at home.
There are multiple learning outcomes that will sprout from the decision of joining the volleyball team:
- Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
- Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
- Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
- Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
- Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
