The Hauico Crisis
It was announced that there would be no school for a week four days ago, the reason behind this decisions is that there was a constant stream of "Haucios" or mudslides wiping out towns all over the country. Therefore, as I knew that there would be a scarcity of resources I decided that I wanted to help out. As a consequence, I talked to a group of friends who lived nearby and found out about an NGO - named OLI - that needed help. For the past four days, I've been going to OLI foundation, in which my friends, me, and a group of 50 people catalogue, pack and, send vast amounts of resources to people whose homes have been wiped out by the mud slides. Peru is in a state of crisis and it's important for all of us help out in one way or another. We will only make a difference if all of us contribute in our own different way.

Global Issues Network
I had the opportunity to go to a GIN (Global Issues Network) conference last week, needless to say, it was an amazing experience. It was set in Rio, Brazil, subjectively, one of the most beautiful places on Earth. The conference created a sense of awe, accompanied by hope and inspiration, something that doesn’t come by very often; the project-leading students didn’t only say that they were gonna change the world, they were already doing it.
My group’s project consisted on implemented already existing programs which let you pay through your phone without the need of any type of credit or debit card and send you a receipt through email. The point was to reduce paper consumption by avoiding the act of having to print a receipt every time you buy something. Even though it may not sound as much of anything, 9.6 million trees are killed each year to create these, about 390 gallons of oil are needed to produce one ton of paper, 249.6 millions gallons of oil and 1.22 billion gallons of water are used in each in the United States for their production.
As we pitched this project to others I realized two things. First, the value of having a team to back you up. My two group partners/friends and I had been working for quite some time on the project. We’d spent countless hours researching and trying to find innovative ways of implementing this system in school. The group bonded over this long an arduous experience, and as a consequence, were able to give a much better presentation. Second, when we saw the reactions on people’s faces after our presentation, we realized that size of the impact we could make. The project was huge, but we were ready to do everything in our power to make it take place.
It’s always great meeting new people, especially in a place like a GIN conference as everyone has the same mindset yet different perspectives towards life. I formed many bonds with people from all over the continent, as a consequence, once I left, I felt that we could make an actual change if we stand together.
Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaborative.
- Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
- Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions (2)
